Since it is Easter time, I thought I would share with you one of my most precious personal photographs…This is my grandmother, Goggy, with me in the 1950s in front of church on Easter Sunday. If you were a child of those days, you probably remember getting a new Easter bonnet and/or spring coat most every year as you were growing up. Easter is filled with many happy memories, including being in church with the windows wide open and baskets of pansies and daffodils on the sills. The fragrance was subtle but it’s imprinted in my mind like it was yesterday. There was a Cross decorated all in daffodils from the parishioners’ gardens. And it was when you brought your Mite Box, full of coins you had saved, back to church to give to the poor.
A few years ago, I came across a quote that I loved:
“Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess”
by Edna Woolman Chase. She was a longtime editor of Vogue. Somehow it seemed to me that those words and this photograph belonged together so I designed this Glittermoon Card. I love my grandmother with a corsage on her Easter suit, with her hat and funny shoes (called “space shoes;” she had to wear them because of many years spent wearing shoes that were just too darn tight when she was a young woman). And there I am with my eyes closed (typical) and goofy hat.
It’s a favorite of mine for obvious reasons…we really were awfully stylish, weren’t we?!.

While we are on the subject of Easter, I’ve brought out some of my own Easter decorations for the first time in a few years. Easter has always been one of the most special times of the year for me. It comes with lots of memories and also the promise of spring; a rebirth for all the world no matter who you are or what you believe.

I have actually been doing a little bit of work in between household chores and the all-consuming job of making my garden club’s Spring Market come to fruition (last weekend – whew). It is a full-time job for a couple of months leading up the big day in late March, the March Into Spring Market. If you are in the RVA area, perhaps you’d like to come visit next year. It’s a terrific kick-off to spring!
I made a special order wreath for a Beekman 1802 neighbor who had fallen in love with the Llama Wreath on the website last Christmas. Here’s how it turned out:

And I got to go to the DC Big Flea in Chantilly, VA earlier this month. My friend Chris and I had a fun time but came home with a pretty light load. There was quite a bit of Christmas stuff but, whoo, the prices were rather staggering.
Still, you could find just about anything and merchandise ranged from the sublime (oh, those sterling dolphin salts!!!):
to the ridiculous (false teeth in a glass box anyone??):
I did manage to snag some putz houses in great condition and a few small vessels for “tiny topiaries” like this cup and saucer:
But the only thing I brought home for myself was a lovely pink luster plate with lambs on it. It segues perfectly into the Easter/spring decor of the moment.

And now, dear friends, I must stop procrastinating on taxes and get them done.

How how I remember my straw Easter hat, new spring coat & white shoes! My mother would never get to sleep the night before preparing for us to look beautiful for Easter! I was up sewing smocked dresses for my daughters till wee hours too & now do it still for grand babies! What wonderful memories of my mom! Thank you for helping me recall how blessed I was & still am!

I loved reading this! Thank you for posting your memories. So much like mine. Loved the picture with your Grandma especially. Sister Sandi, my partner in Pink Eyed Sissies, was the littlest of three sisters. We all got an Easter bonnet, new white gloves and new shoes for Easter Sunday. One year Mom made us all three matching, but different pastel colored coats. They were lined and beautiful.

Such a treat to hear from you! I have missed seeing you and Sandi very much. Sandra tells me you girls are slowing down with the Sissies….I’m backing off a lot of shows myself. But the great thing about what we do is that we can do it without leaving home!
I loved hearing about you in your Easter finery. My sister and I used to have matching outfits, too – our Mom’s choice, not ours (!) but still very, very cute. I hope you have some photos of you all together!
I would like to wish you – and yours, especially Sandi – a wonderful Eastertide as well. Take care of yourself and I will hope to see you sooner rather than later.
